Graph Words

What is it?

It’s an online interactive English dictionary and thesaurus that helps you find the meanings of words and show connections among associated words. You can easily see the meaning of each by simply placing the mouse cursor over it.

Usage

To search for a word, type the word in the search box at the top of the window and press the "Draw" button. You may also press the enter key instead. After searching for a word, the main display will populate with many words and meanings. The word you searched for will appear in the center of the display, and will be surrounded with words and meanings that are related to it.

To save what is currently displayed in the Graph Words, you can press the "Save as image" button on the toolbar.

Underlayer Underneath Graph Words lays the WordNet - a large lexical database of English. Nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs are grouped into sets of cognitive synonyms (synsets), each expressing a distinct concept. These meanings and semantic relationships are revealed graphically by the HTML5 canvas made available by Graph Words.

Qu'est-ce que c'est ?

C'est un dictionnaire et thésaurus anglais interactif en ligne ayant pour objet d'aider à trouver la signification des mots en montrant les corrélations entre les mots associés. Il suffit de placer son curseur sur un mot pour en faire apparaître le sens.

Utilisation Pour chercher un mot, saisissez le dans la boîte de recherche située en haut de la fenêtre et appuyez sur le bouton « Draw » (dessiner) ou sur la touche « Entrée ». L'écran principal affichera alors un certain nombre de mots et de significations. Le mot cherché apparaîtra au centre de l'écran, et sera entouré par des mots et qui s'en rapprochent et leur signification.

Pour obtenir une saisie d'écran, appuyer sur l'option « Save as image » dans la barre d'outils.

Sous-bassement

Graph Words est sous-tendu par WordNet, vaste base de données lexicales de l'anglais. Noms, verbes, adjectifs et adverbes sont regroupés en ensembles de synonymes cognitifs (« synsets ») exprimant chacun un concept distinct. Les significations et les corrélations sémantiques sont visuellement révélées par la toile HTML5 de Graph Words.

WordNet

WordNet is a lexical database for the English language. It groups English words into sets of synonyms called synsets, provides short, general definitions, and records the various semantic relations between these synonym sets. The purpose is twofold: to produce a combination of dictionary and thesaurus that is more intuitively usable, and to support automatic text analysis and artificial intelligence applications. The database and software tools have been released under a BSD style license and can be downloaded and used freely. The database can also be browsed online. WordNet was created and is being maintained at the Cognitive Science Laboratory of Princeton University under the direction of psychology professor George A. Miller. WordNet est une base de données lexicales portant sur la langue anglaise. Manypedia - Comparing lingustic points of view
     On Manypedia, you can compare a Wikipedia page in one language with a page on the same subject or a closely related one in another language, if one exists, and have the second page translated or not into the language of the first.
     A link to the site has been added to TerminoTrad under LazyTerm (English/French/Spanish/Portuguese interconnections).



Manypedia - Comparer les points de vue lingustiques
     Manypedia permet de comparer une page de Wikipédia dans une langue avec une page sur le même sujet ou un sujet apparenté dans une autre langue, s'il en existe une, et de taduire ou non la deuxième page dans la langue de la première.
Un lien pointant vers le site a été ajouté à TerminoTrad, dans le volet TerminoParesse (interconnexions anglais/français/espagnol/portugais).

Global Glossary

Michal Boleslav Mechura (Dublin, Ireland) just announced on LinkedIn that he has been working on a new multilingual dictionary, called Global Glossary (http://www.globalglossary.org/). It is a collection of bilingual glossaries extracted from Wiktionary, OmegaWiki, FreeDict and other freely available sources. As of now it contains glossaries in 13 languages paired up into 48 bidirectional language pairs. In some of these language pairs, the glossary available there is the biggest you’ll find anywhere on the Internet.

He is planning to add many more languages in the future. Eventually, he hopes to cover all languages of the world for which good-quality, freely available glossaries can be found on the Web.

Michal Boleslav Mechura [Dublin (Irlande)] vient d' annoncer sur LinkedIn qu'il travaille sur un nouveau dictionnaire multilingue, dénommé Global Glossary (http://www.globalglossary.org/). Il s'agit là d'une collection de glossaires bilingues extraits du Wiktionnaire, d'OmegaWiki, de FreeDict et d'autres sources gratuitement mises à la disposition des internautes. Cet outil rassemble d'ores et déjà des glossaires en 13 langues jumelés en 48 paires bidirectionnelles. Pour certaines de ces paires, le corpus ainsi constitué est le plus vaste de ceux qu'offre actuellement l'Internet.

Michal, qui prévoit d'ajouter de nombreuses autres langues à l'avenir, espère en fait parvenir à couvrir toutes les langues du monde pour lesquelles existent des glossaires de bonne qualité mis en libre accès sur le Web.
